ADHD and Gifted?
When a child is diagnosed with ADHD and is also gifted, what kinds of support do they need?
-
A teacher who challenges and motivates the child with engaging curriculum and discussions that appeal to the child's interests and creativity. Classroom accommodations must support giftedness first with advanced instruction and fast pace (Gilman, 2019).
-
Regular exercise to manage energy and aid focus, regular recess, and opportunities to move.
-
Adequate structure and routine.
-
Preferential seating near instruction and away from distractions.
-
Chunking of assignments and especially long projects into manageable tasks.
-
Help with organizational tasks and getting started on assignments.
-
Social Skills groups for help with peer relationships (especially with other gifted children).
-
Counseling or role play around social skills.
